    Completing the Instant City

“The man who is traveling and does not yet know the city awaiting him along his route wonders what the palace will be like, the barracks, the mill, the theater, the bazaar. In every city of the empire every building is different and set in a different order: but as soon as the stranger arrives at the unknown city and his eye penetrates the pine cone of pagodas and garrets and haymows, following the scrawl of canals, gardens, rubbish heaps, he immediately distinguishes which are the princes’ palaces, the high priests’ temples, the tavern, the prison, the slum. This – some say – confirms the hypothesis that each man bears in his mind a city made only of differences, a city without figures and without form, and the individual cities fill it up.”

    – Invisible Cities, Italo Calvino (download entire novel)

Congratulations on the second “Instant City!” There’s so much exciting architecture.

Addressing Vanessa’s concern about whether the current city is livable or not, I believe it’s a matter of sustaining the energy until it is actually finished. Heavy lifting has been done, and now cohesive elements need to be added by people who are inspired to. This is another layer: showing how people interact with the city. What small things could be added to complete the sense of livability. A book store?  Sidewalk paintings? A café?  Or perhaps some infrastructure,  like a simple helpful path or fence someplace, to guide traffic along…

Also in response to Vanessa’s 27 day post, Savage’s outline sounds like a great idea for the next Instant City. Small teams working on cohesive individual cities or areas could foster more presence on the sim, some healthy competition, and people across time zones might collaborate.

    All the best, Newton
    going for the 30th update

PS: Sorry, I am having issues with my wordpress account (I guess) so was not able to respond in context on Vanessa’s blog here)

I wonder how many writers are surprised by the way their characters act. I had no idea who would move into the motel and I have no idea what they will do next. I do notice that, with blogging, the story reads backwards, which confuses both the reader and the writer.

      • Elle 13:39 on 13/01/2017 Permalink | Reply

One could start reading at the begining of the story, or consider it a time jumping work of fiction. Your characters do seem to have a mind of their own. 🙂

1st MUGA show: “Touch Me – While I Hold My Breath” by Gwynie Beaumont

The Medici University Gallery of Art is pleased to announce its first exhibition at the Art Farm (LEA28).

“Touch Me – While I Hold My Breath” by Gwynie Beaumont, an installation of sculpture on the MUGA grounds and a retrospective of her photography in the gallery.

Opening show 1 PM SLT, August 15, 2015.
The show will run through August 22.

Due to real life, I won’t be able to attend, but the artist will be available to answer questions. I hope you all can attend.

    The sculptures are really fun.

For the next show, I’d like to get everyone at the sim to contribute to an installation in the gallery. Make it a collaborative effort, the kind Edie envisioned. 😀

Generatives, glitch, and gifs MUGA opening

The Generatives, glitch, and gifs opening was held on Friday, June 5th. It was a nice event and there was a good turnout. The artists talked about their work and it was an opportunity for others on the campus and off to meet them.

Thank you everyone who helped with this event, loaned their work to the aspiring gallery, and attended this event. A special thanks to the artists – Pearl Grey, FeelsEmpty, Elle Thorkveld, and Michael Green – and to Oona for building the gallery.

The show will run through June 15. Please stop by if you haven’t had a chance to see the show. After that, I’ll try to do one last show, probably machinima.

Here are some pics from the event:

    BAOC awarded to Alexandre Lois

    baoc

This week I’m passing the Big Avatar on Campus award on to Alexandre. Alexandre is one of MU’s greatest contributors and most prolific artists. He is active on the blog, on campus, and he is a very diverse and talented artist.

If I had to say one thing about his art – and there’s lots to say – I’d say his art always makes me think, it makes me reconsider the world through his eyes. I love that. And his music is cool.

    Congratulations, Alexandre.

    The Worst Day Ever

black-and-white photo of Edie Sedgwick Avatar sitting on a sofa.

HAPPIER TIMES – In this photo for an upcoming interview with MU/Creativity magazine, taken less than 24 hours before her death, Edie Sedgwick talked about her excitement and optimism for the future.

I have terrible and sad news classmates! 🙁 Edie Sedgwick is dead. Again. Her body was found this morning floating at the bank of the Eleonora Slough near Neeva Torok’s studio. Oona Nostra was the last person to see her alive.

Please read the full report at MU/Creativity and offer any tips you can to help solve this terrible tragedy.
