    Andrea Foenander

Michael’s invited Andrea Foenander to join us on Monday! Here’s the talk she gave at EZTV in April!

She’s got a lot of compelling ideas as well as an exciting upcoming project to tell us about. Ideas like

How would contemporary culture & art historical discourse be different if Charles Saatchi liked riding a bicycle through a virtual landscape instead of plopping formaldehyde sharks on gallery floors?

Michael has asked similar questions when he’s talked about all that art history has failed to include in recent times. For myself, I’ve felt that work with Virtual Reality & Virtual Worlds has existed in a space separate from the object production & commodity culture of the main art historical narrative.

An event like Burning Man exists largely off the art historical grid. It’s not much talked about in museums, galleries, art fairs. Yeah it’s had impact in so many ways, including inspiring Philip Rosedale to create his Virtual World. Famously, one of the key reasons Larry Page & Sergey Brin allowed Eric Schmidt to be CEO of Google, was because he’d been to Burning Man.

Does New Media want/need validation from Old Media? Or does it create its own independent cultural narratives?

    ONE Night Video

Wow! The live dancers were wonderful. And they had a freaking drone flying around! How cool is that!?! Congrats to everyone involved in the production!

Monerda Skute (pink) & Trilby Minotaur (blue) VR dancing on the side of a building as LED illuminated dancers perform on the ground.

Oh wow! We never knew we were on! We waited from 8-11pm waiting for our cue, and were told a few times, You’re on in 5 minutes, but we thought we’d never been cued. Apparently, we were on! For about 1/2 hour they tell me. We never were cued to do Section 3, the most animated and live portion of the performance, but as you see here, Monerda, Trilby, Harmony & Scarlett were projected in gigantic splendor in the outdoor performance in Los Angeles celebrating the anniversary of EZTV.

I apologize for duplicating my comments, just realized I wanted to say congrats here. Not enough caffeine yet πŸ˜€ “Michael, Van and fellow cast: It is so cool that your dance performance was a success and congrats about LA Weekly giving it Top 5 honors! We avatars had fun despite anxiously awaiting our cue πŸ™‚ The projection photos look great and I can’t wait to see video. I bet the RL dancers were super!”

Dear anyone reading – I’d love your thoughts!

The projection you see is avatars on a “white” background. Technically an SL “white” but not “full bright” white. I thought “full bright” might cause gamma issues with the on-site projector.

I thought about a Black background – this would have been cool in that instead of illuminating the whole side of the building, we’d only have avatars up there dancing. My fear was that the dancer’s bodies tend to roll into shadow, so with a black background you’d only get 2/3 of a body or so with the rest disappearing into shadow.

So, the white background felt, all things considered, aesthetically preferable.

      What do you think?

i think its pretty cool either way good job us!

I liked what Kate Johnson had to say today in the Mixed Berry Shake hangout: they both worked in different ways — the black background featured the dancers as floating on the surface; the white background highlighted the dancers beautifully.

Andrea’s talk was very Interesting! Unfortunately the audio was pretty hard to hear: I think it might have been a combination of speakers not being that close to the microphone in a boomy room, multiplied by massive Google Hangout audio compression & audio artifacts. When it’s a “broadcast” more than a “Hangout / Chat” maybe we should try something like Ustream and see if it’s any clearer / less compressed. For some reason, perhaps mic proximity or vocal characteristics, whenever Michael spoke he was the 1 person that way crystal clear! πŸ˜€

I’m dashing out of the studio ATM, but here’s 3 interesting points Michael raised, and I’ll comment about them later in the day:

      1. Siggraph as “trade show”
      2. Archival issues in new media
      3. Who transcends new media to become historically important

Thanks so much for streaming Andrea’s talk!

What’s On [My] Mind – Live Hangout!

    Live from Houston!

    • Christa Forster 13:38 on 13/03/2014 Permalink | Reply

Wonderful! Thank you for this, Vanessa. I just posted in another place that my %#^& screen recording plan went awry because I FAILED TO TURN IT ON before the performance. I recorded every other thing — every rehearsal, whether formal or informal, making sure I had the technology down. Then, at the moment when it mattered, I failed!

Hah! “Ruin is a great teacher….” Indeed.

Also, Michael told me that the second performance was marred technologically by someone-who-shall-soon-be-clobbered’s unmuted microphone! (my husband’s).

Hah! Again. Perhaps it was my male ancestors making their presence known.

Here’s to you, Mistress of the Muted Microphone! Thanks for your support. It means a lot to me.

Blueberry Hangout Agenda – Monday 9a EZT

    Hangout-Katrina

Katrina is our scheduled facilitator for Monday. I haven’t heard if she’s available yet, so here’s a tentative agenda if Katina is not facilitating. (If she is, then our agenda will be whatever she’d like to set.)

    Blueberry Hangout, 10 Feb 2014

9-10am EZT on Monday 10 Feb (EZT = EZTV Time = PST or California Time)

    Agenda

    1. Hello, chitchat, catching up
    2. Info, Questions, Feedback on Katrina’s O Lover! O Death! currently a part of Laurie Beth Clark (Spatula)’s Ossuary exhibition, and whose heroine, Edison Marshall (1950, 1850, 2500 BCE) we hope will be participating in Christa’s #1850charla
    3. Info, Questions, Feedback on Christa’s 28 Feb Event #1850charla
    4. Info, Questions, Feedback on Michael’s 12 Apr Event Fly-By & parent project In (The Dark)
    5. For our “PBR Discussion” I thought we might take a look at the interview Rhizome published in Dec between Italian critic/curator Domenico Quaranta and German experimental video artist Matthias Fritsch of Technoviking fame/infamy.

sounds great! I have another video chat scheduled right before so I may be a minute late logging into Blueberries. It’s a lot on the agenda but I look forward to hearing updates about everyone’s projects. Talk to you monday!

Hi Molly, Michael & Christa… I’ve not heard from Katrina or Rebecca yet… so we may be short of our “6 Blueberries” this month… what do you think of inviting someone else to sit in with us? Like Ciara? Or Kate? Or?

That might be diluting the Blueberry “team.” Or it might be maintaining the team across natural evolution. Any thoughts or preferences?

New EZT time zone Now that we…

    New “EZT” time zone!
Now that we aren’t enrolled in a course at Stanford anymore, we might as well stop calling “California Time” “Stanford Time.” But it’s still as good a time zone as any since a couple of us are there and the EZTV April 12 event is there. Also SL, based out of SF, runs on that time zone also, aka “SLT.” So I propose we use “EZTV Time” and to keep with the style of PST, EST, GMT, CET, etc, why don’t we just call it “EZT”

Reading this article I thought of Michael Masucci’s…

Reading this article, I thought of Michael Masucci’s worry that our technology could be creating a cultural vacuum. If the grid goes out, what happens to all the art that is stored there digitally?

    http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/dec/30/we-need-to-talk-about-ted

    • mjmasucci 23:14 on 01/01/2014 Permalink | Reply

Interesting article, Christa. I liked how it clearly describes the “American Idolization” not only of science, but of thought in general. It has become far more important how many re-tweets an idea gets, than if the idea has specific merits for discourse. In such a paradigm, the flat earth theory would have won.
TED is infotainment, disguised as discourse. That’s not necessarily bad, but the model needs to mature, evolve, and become less like a sales pitch, and more like a discussion (hard to do with its one-way lecture format).

    Open Culture

Screen Shot 2013-12-16 at 6.15.37 PM

Today I referenced Open CultureΒ while hanging out with the Blueberries. My recommendation is that Michael promote the EZTV archives by tweeting out links to different content, the way Open Culture promotes its content.

Gravatars are tied to email accounts. So if the email associated with a site is different than the email for your gravatar, you might get a “waveatar” instead.

You potentially could have a different email address on your own WP blog, and here on .Re/act and you could even have a different email over on .Re/search. If you wanted to, you could change the email on address on any or all of those sites, and then the corresponding gravatar would show up on comments.

        Thanks Christa,

I will definitely start looking into this and the other flavors of social media that you, Vanessa and others are suggesting. They are all really great ideas. Around Jan 18th, we plan to announce the formal press release, not just about the EZTV Museum projects, but some related events, including several exhibitions and performances (including one that Van will be virtually participating in). We will attempt to distribute ti through both existing social media channels, but also through more traditional press outlets. This will be in conjunction with USC, as well as through the email lists of about half a dozen art organizations here in LA.

Your suggestions have been great, and much appreciated, so never hesitate to give your thoughts, criticisms, etc. as we move forward.
