    Update

Emma made a lot of additions this weekend. There is now a lot of industry in the city, balanced nicely with relaxation and consciousness-raising spaces. Visit soon.

Party and Some Fall Session 2 Ideas

Today Fall Session 1 Ended. There was a party on Sunday 11/08. People had some ideas about Fall Session 2, which starts on 11/21. Notes are in the attached note card and on MU Talk at http://mediciuniversity.co.uk/talk.

Edie is cc’d on all of us in case she has a different plan! Please chime in with your thoughts, changes, volunteering, etc.

Notes on Ideas for Fall Session 2 Areas:

    1. Pop-up Galleries could continue as Unsanctioned Art Galleries –  The most recent rotation has been in place for about 3 weeks. Elle would announce the next rotation before 11/21 and people can contact her if interested in having a gallery at UAG. Pearl and others said they would continue to give Elle some admin help.

    2. Art Farm Giant Studio – would replace the Youth Hostel. The purpose of the Giant Studio is for people who want community and spontaneous collaboration to work together in a sandbox atmosphere. Serra Qendra would set up an initial structure/schedule for this area pending feedback.

    3. Art Farm Writes the Plank – For writers, on Trilby’s ship. Events to be announced.

    4. Art Farm Film Studios –  An area for photography and machinima, with sets created by Art Farm participants. This area would have a similar logistical setup as the old pop-up galleries: 10-12 “plots”  for individual participants’ sets which can be used by anyone for photos or filming. Depending on interest, different people could host sets over the 6 weeks, and individual sets can change. This area needs a main administrator to kick things off!

***** A reminder regarding the All Inclusive and Creative Commons policies:

Everyone is encouraged to set out YOUR full perm kits and information about your work for learning purposes. Creative Commons work is highly encouraged.  All participants should expect photos to be taken of your work and published on blogs and in Flickr Art Farm group. Photographers, please credit the artist. Selling work on LEA land is not permitted.

A Few Good Reasons to Drop Out of Art School

I first saw this article in Art News and now the New Yorker has picked it up.

I think there is an interesting thru-line here with the whole notion of getting a free art education at M.U. and collaborative teaching and learning.

“On Friday, the first-year students in the Roski School of Art and Design M.F.A. program announced that they were all dropping out. “All,” in this case, meant seven students: a small number, but, given the difficulty of getting students or artists to do anything together, the action was a feat of organization and solidarity. It was also a brave gesture—not heroic, maybe, but one made at a personal cost and resonant with the larger situation in art right now.”

    Classes

Greetings, some new classes have been posted to the class schedule page! Don’t miss ’em.

    Organizer: Neeva
Event: USA Today bestselling fantasy author Anthea Sharp has agreed to come to MU and talk/answer questions about her work and about the new era of digital publishing. She has been traditionally published, but hit the best seller list independently by selling her novels directly through Amazon, Apple, and other outlets. She can come Sunday March 29. 10:00 SL time (unless another time works better for us). She’s a great resource for aspiring writers. Her Feyland books combine the fairy realm with virtual reality. Antheasharp.com is her website. She also writes historical romances about artists and musicians and has had numerous short stories published.

Time: Sunday March 29. 10:00 SLT (unless another time works better for us)

    Organizer: Zsophia
Event: This is a basic Second Life Safety class with information and tools you can use!

Noted, Neeva. We’re trying to work it out so people can add their classes directly to the left-side calendar. It requires some special setup in the blog.

great schedule rmarie! One thing though, you’ve put graduation a full month before our LEA AIR ends on 30 June. Perhaps move it back a couple of weeks till 15 June or so?

    • Izzy 10:41 on 12/02/2015 Permalink | Reply

Hey Chaplain, I was just reading Pearl’s beautiful post about her own challenges & triumphs. I think we need an MU Student Pride Parade.

The 1 March Convocation itself could be the parade. Or, if you’d rather keep the Convocation a more traditional event, the Pride Parade could be, perhaps the day before, on Saturday 28 Feb, also at 10am SLT.

Thanks for the great updates Izzy. The post is edited to reflect the changes. I have also updated the Google calendar.

For students who like face-to-face, more structured meetings, I plan on scheduling some office hours at differing times soon. There’s now a mailbox for notecards at my studio on Vashti 2.

Feel free to IM pearlgrey resident or say hello when you see me at Medici.

The audio on my laptop isn’t working so I don’t hear the ping of an IM and may not respond immediately.

    Fertility Clinic

    fertility_clinic_001

MU AF&S Director Dr. Renie Schollerer, aka “Aunt Renie,” has actualized the build for The Avatar Surrogacy & Fertility Clinic in Maria.  Dr. Schollerer followed a successful career in women’s health and pediatrics with a focus on avatar fertility. She is an expert on avatar reproductive systems. For those who are interested in advanced genetic engineering, I hear tell there will also be a first-of-its-kind “salad bar” of designer chromosomes from which to choose, and that the clinic also specializes in painless mesh baby birthing practices. What a wonderful confluence of science and art! We’ll be watching for grand opening parties.

    • Dr. Renie "Aunt Renie" Schollerer 08:40 on 07/02/2015 Permalink | Reply

Thank you for the lovely introduction rmarie!

Yes, MU’s AF&SC needs to do some hiring! The facility needs:

      General Manager
      Attending Physician VR/OB/GYN
      Nurses (Delivery Room)
      Nurses (Chromosome Salad Bar)

In addition to this staff, we’ll also be looking for Surrogacy Avatars, to help other avatars who want to start a family, but are unable or unwilling to personally carry their mesh baby to term.

MU should also facilitate family adoptions. Perhaps that is out of the scope of AF&SC… so we may need a whole new facility! So much hiring to do!

And most importantly, for those wishing to start families… whether by visiting the chromosome bar… or conceiving by traditional methods… or arranging for surrogacy… or by adoption… we welcome your visit to MU. We offer Virtual World Class service! From the MU Family to Your Family!

    Chaplain’s Update

    naotoHattori

You who bring so much inspiration, excitement, experience, and essentialness,

With the influx of artists, students, and faculty arriving at MU in prep for the semester, the much-awaited materialisation of a bar on campus happened last night. This essential infrastructure is located on the East Side of the bridge over the Eleonora Gorge. It is called BBC Brewery. Izzy and Vanessa, your branding and innovation should make every virtual campus vibrate with beer-induced (and other-induced) inspiration.

Along other inspirational lines: the kiosks! Of course they are intended to be informational, but random kiosk art will be such a fun way to get people moving around and looking at things. As Izzy announced in VB Friends: Add MediciUniversity as a friend get edit perms on the kiosks.

(As one always in search of new manifestos and screeds, I find this latest kiosk development most exhilarating.)

Please note: The Chaplain will be IRL for 3 or 4 days, but will be checking this forum as well as the class schedule.

    Maria Bridges

Bridges can be between friends, towns, cities, sometimes countries.  Bridges are for building, walking, tearing down and building again.

Little Bridges – Right now, there are two bridges straddling the gorge based at Maria 13 and 6 (http://mediciuniversity.co.uk/artists-studios/). The goal is to whittle it down to one bridge. One of these? Maybe. Both bridges are wooden. One is a classic “girder” style with twinkling lights all over it. The other is an arched deck, blackened, with four torches on each side. Although crossing that torch bridge might singe your eyebrows, you should see Paypaback ride her motorcycle across it!  Thoughts on bridges are welcome~!

Big Bridges – There’s also a big bridge closer to Mt. Rushmore. What? Thats not Mt. Rushmore? Well who is on Mt. Rushmore if it isn’t the three of them? Some kind of bridge building curriculum is in the works for that. Imagine a bridge building collaborative “class,” including formal bridge installation, party on bridge, and  more.  There could be one bridge per month between March and June, if the class flows in the usual SL relaxed manner. More extensive info is forthcoming in the class schedule!

Greetings from the Office of the Chaplain

Hello. It is with high hopes and congratulations that we watch MU come alive.

The Office of the Chaplain is here to provide resources for worship, social opportunities, weddings, funerals, and other rites as needed.

Thank you for your warm welcome Chaplain Beedit. In honor of all the wonderful new students moving in to MU just now, I’d like to officially wave the traditional L$1 fee for holding weddings and other special events. For the rest of Spring Semester, holding special events at MU will be free for all Students, Faculty & Friends of MU.
