    BAOC awarded to Muse

Hmm.. so it’s friday.. right? Last friday i came back from my stay elsewhere and went for a ‘just quick look for a little while’ Those quick little while’s never happen tho but that aside. Felt very warmly welcomed by a lot of mu people. Its amazing how MU keeps changing and developing, like a living creature. If you look around after 7 weeks not seeing with your own eyes it’s very notable.
Just when i was going to sleep Izzy put on a song on her screen from an artist who will remain nameless for now , and of course i had had had to go look 9___9.. after some dancing she rendered me speechless by saying BAOC and trowing the classical primcube trophy on the floor for me to take.
While i’m honored and kinda proud in this weird way i actually thought for a sec about not taking it. Since the start of MU there have been some many thing going on, so many people doing all these cool and mindtickling things.. its almost unfair to pick one out. But at the same time the only reason i took it is because the privilege of receiving this BOAC thing is you get to choose someone to give it to.. well and leaving your mark on that primcube, less important but also fun do.. Kinda checked immediately if the person that i thought of didn’t already got it.. and no yet, so my luck 🙂

In rl i enjoy quotes from people.. it’s full of things for me to think about. In SL i like mesh, light, details, machine things, power chords, whatevers.. Combined made me make a neon lettered quote on the trophy which i’m fond of and in a way applies to a lot what is happening on MU.

Art is anything you can get away with.
    ~Marshall McLuhan

I will pass it on to someone who started a while in after MU’s start, her studio being across the street of mine. At the beginning a lot of the time when i was at my place, i saw her standing being busy or muttering around a bit. Also waving back for a friendly chitchat when i or people wandered by. After some time i began to see her at almost every class i went, diligently participating and seeing more and more of things she seemed to have taken in back in her work. When returning after my 7 weeks staring at MU’s site and flickr, where she adds quite an amount of pictures, i suddenly saw this huge leap, even in appearance.

So dear muse. i’m giving this week’s BAOC to you. Its because i think you took the opportunity that MU gives.. or maybe even grabbed with both hands and try to learn everything what you found to be interesting. I heard you saying sometimes you weren’t always happy with the results but i noticed that didn’t got you down, kept going on trying to improve yourself for the better. Yesterday even.. when i half uninspired lazy asked if you were going to critics class, you cheerfully said ‘of course.. i go every week’ which did made me decide to come too. You had to show something too. A painting you made after a class assignment that you felt had some restrictions so you made another just because.. you really seem to enjoy yourself and do things out of your own for yourself. You are open about what you’re doing, what you are learning or have learned, sometimes even vulnerable, which i admire immensely. You inspire me to keep enjoying learning, school myself and ‘keep doing’ as you said yourself so very strikingly.
I think you can be very proud of yourself for the sweet and earnest MU student you are, i am and very happy to congratulate you for being this week’s BAOC.

    BAOC Awarded to Emma Maybe!

Emma Maybe & Izzy Medici at Nostradamus-8 at Medici University at LEA23

Emma being modest and Me dancing with joy to an Ithaca Audio live mashup as I present the 12th weekly BAOC Award to Emma!

Last week’s BAOC Award Winner, Alexandre Lois declined to award someone new, so I’ve restarted it today, appropriately enough on Emma’s return to campus! Emma has a brand new trophy, made of the finest plywood and sanded to a perfect .5 x .5 x .5 meters.

On campus Emma has been a true Big Avatar On Campus, always greeting and engaging so many people. Always taking an interest and sharing genuine concern for campus colleagues. Awesome as Emma’s on campus contributions have been, her extended vacation has almost been more remarkable. Off on a long 6-week, SL-free trip, she’s used Slack (and hacked poor Slackbot with Rick Astley!) to remain a vital part of our campus conversation. Emma’s desire to be a part of this community has transcended even 6 weeks off-world. You can’t ask for more than that. You can’t dream of more than that.

    Welcome Home, Emma!

    BAOC awarded to Alexandre Lois

This week I’m passing the Big Avatar on Campus award on to Alexandre. Alexandre is one of MU’s greatest contributors and most prolific artists. He is active on the blog, on campus, and he is a very diverse and talented artist.

If I had to say one thing about his art – and there’s lots to say – I’d say his art always makes me think, it makes me reconsider the world through his eyes. I love that. And his music is cool.

    Congratulations, Alexandre.

On a side note, I broke the award. I really couldn’t link my addition to it, but it’s on Alexandre’s studio, now. Sorry about that, Hope someone can fix it.

    BAOC Award

Passing along the BAOC award, I thank MU for this honor.  I would like to give the award to Oona Nostra (msbluerasp) in recognition of her diligent pleasance at MU. And also her especially beautiful bio-prose mixed-media Flickr entries – a diary of the romantic existential,  living on in perpetuity. It is always a pleasure to run into Oona on campus or to participate in a class with her. Thank you Oona!

    BAOC Award

It is hard to choose a new Big Avatar On Campus award winner from the many creative, involved individuals at MU, but one stood out to me and I select Newton. He has created an excellent series of classes with his Cafe Sophistry, which has already covered Gender and Virtuality and Time. Class sections start with an interesting philosophical discussion and end with the creation and display of art! In addition to facilitating the class, Newton has provided some delightful artistic entries and handled controversy in a graceful and thoughtful manner. I’m looking forward to the next section. Congratulations Newton!

    BAOC Award to Elle Thorkveld

I choose Elle Thorkveld as the next BAOC Award recipient. Elle has done tai chi at the dojo with me, has an amazing entry in the Cyberart contest at LEA 12, has been involved in GIMP classes, has written for my storyboard projects and now is assisting with the proposal to continue the spirit of Medici University in some form. She gives encouraging words to others and has participated in many projects, events and parties at MU.
Even with her talent and skills, she’s made time to give positive feedback for my efforts and this is what has made her stand out from many talented and productive learners. Not only has she been supportive in public forums such as this but she’s also been quietly welcoming and interested in how I’m doing on campus.
I’m rather in awe of her focus, consistency, ability to appear centered while stretching in different directions even more than she’d planned and juggling many things with apparent grace. For these reasons, and more on other levels, I’ve drawn a compass for her and added it to the award.
    Congratulations Elle!

    BAOC Award

The best part of receiving the Big Avatar On Campus Award is being able to choose the next winner, and I choose Pearl Grey. I had been reading her blog, Million Happy Endings, for a long time, so I was happy to find her at MU. She now has a second blog to describe her adventures here. I have especially enjoyed her storyboard contests. If she is not in her studio, you might meet her at the Tai Chi place at MU. In honor of her writing skills, I added a pencil to the trophy. Congratulations, Pearl!

I’m afraid our calendar will never be able to capture the spontaneous stuff like the pink-pillow-bus sky tour or Onna kickboxing my tower until it collapsed while a crowd cheered her on. You just have to be here to get in on that good stuff.

Big Avatar On Campus Week 3: Art Oluja

Seven nights I slept so good with the Trophy next to me – time to pass it on to the next Big Avatar On Campus.

You all may have read this more than one time already, but it is true that it is not easy to decide for one person. However, the BAOC Award for this week goes to Art Oluja for her Editor work and lots of interviews she did so far. I hope to see her some time today to present her with the Trophy.

I also thought that a picture with the several states of metamorphosis may be nice, so here it is.

The history of the BAOC Trophy so far ...

The history of the BAOC Trophy so far …

On the left side Izzy’s creation which went to Neeva, in the middle you can see Neeva’s light-projector which went to me and on the right side my interpretation which goes to Art. Izzy’s first primitive object is still part of it as well as one of Neeva’s (means showing them as creator).

Now, next Friday it will be Art’s turn to pick the Big Avatar On Campus for week 4.  She can add something to the trophy and pass it along to the next BAOC … and yes, I stole this sentence from Neeva’s post.

    Congratulations Art!

I’m in love with the metamorphosing of this trophy (of course I would be haha!), and I’m tempted to go on about how its a wonderful metaphor for how I like to think of MU, in that exquisite corpse creative process sort of way. It’s been a pleasure being a part of MU and getting to know so many creative people, it’s quite a rush of inspiration, and I’m looking forward to more of it!

Big Avatar On Campus Week 2: Fanny Vermont

Fanny explaining the mysteries of SL photography lighting

Fanny explaining the mysteries of SL photography lighting

All right, my seven days of fame are over. It’s time for Neeva to pass the torch…er…prim to the next honored Big Avatar on Campus.

It’s very hard to pick just one person, but the BAOC trophy for week 2 goes to Fanny Vermont. Here’s why: She taught a fabulous photography class. She posed in the nude for two hours for life drawing class. She posts (and responds to posts) on the MU flickr group. I’ve seen her influence in the work of other photographers on campus (creating custom poses for photograph shoots). And…she is regularly working on campus actively creating a body of work and helping to create a vibrant community. She’s making art and generously sharing what she knows with others.

There are a lot of big avatars on Campus, but among them Fanny stands tall. Congrats Fanny, you deserve it!

Now, next Friday it will be Fanny’s turn to pick the Big Avatar On Campus for week 3.  She can add something to the trophy and pass it along to the next BAOC.

Awwwww. /Blush. Thanks! But better than getting the award will be next week’s chance to give it. I know some very worthy BAOCs already, but if you know someone who is really having a breakout week let me know.

We have this great sim, blogs, studios until June. The Universe has given us this really unexpected gift. What happens now is in our hands. As an artist, writer, photographer, of any level of skill, this is a amazing opportunity to try more, risk more, create more, learn more, and teach more than you ever have before. It’s a chance to make a supportive community. To build a mini-Renaissance from the ground up. So catch fire. Have fun. Show up and do stuff. And let me know what you are doing so i can cheer you on.
