Creative Writing Department

Office of The Provost
Dear Annah, Astrid, Diptheria, Glad, Laney, Oona, Ravensong, Wendz & Paypabak,
I’m pleased to inform you that the 9 of you comprise the largest department at MU!
As such, I think you are the flagship department to get activities rolling here at MU. I’d love to have you meetup, Avatar-2-Avatar, or in discussion on MU/Talk, or in whatever form(s) work best. Literally EVERY writer I have ever heard speak in my entire life has answered the inevitable question, “how do I become a better writer?” with “Read!” If being a Virtual University is to mean anything at all, I’d highly suggest that, if you aren’t already, the 9 of you should be reading and discussing each other’s work.
Your feedback to each other should be as deep as possible. “Great piece” really isn’t very helpful to a serious writer. Nor is “you suck.” A respectful, yet honest and fearless critique really is the most helpful to a serious artist of any kind. I suggest trying to avoid things like “like” and “don’t like” or “love” and “hate” completely. Instead of assigning a value judgement to a work, try to be analytic. What “works” and what is “problematic”? WHY does it “work”? WHAT ABOUT IT is “problematic”? Can you suggest other authors to read who work in a related space?
Is your work online? Whether or not you’re a “blogger,” as a 21st century author, in a virtual world no less, your work (or some of it at least) should be accessible online. Please let me, and your classmates know the URL you publish at. Or if you don’t have one, drop by WordPress.com, Tumblr.com, or Blogger.com to get a free site. Or drop me a message and you’re also welcome to post your work at KATYPERRYOPOLIS.club
I’d like to encourage you to schedule a meetup in the next week or so. I’m happy to attend if my presence can be useful. But I’m equally happy to let you get to know each other without my administrative presence.
I hope I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating,
WELCOME TO MEDICI UNIVERSITY!
I hope you have a great Spring ’15 semester here!
— Izzy

While I definitely agree with the advice “Read,” I think “Write” is even more important. I will follow your instructions. I have a post on my approach to blogging in SL in polish mode, but I will also pay attention to MU Talk. Now that I seem to have conquered Word Press’s Fortress of Password protocols, I will spend time here as well as inworld.

I would like to be included please. My interdisciplinary Arts study is partially Creative Writing.
I’m not quite ready to share my writing just yet. (My SL WordPress blog isn’t where I put my stash.) My strategy is to just write first, then study and edit, repetitively.
I’d be more than happy to read the work of others.
