The abridged transcript for our first Café Sophistry Dystopian Daydreams session is now available. Thanks to all participants – it was a great conversation and journey through Outbreak and Once Upon a Fairy Tale.
Please note, our next meeting is Sunday, March 12 at 9am SLT. Please bring a new creation along the lines of our discussion topic, which was essentially “regeneration from destruction.” We were philosophical and all mediums are good, but we also discussed creating a simple “dystopian” piece such as a texture, furniture, or other item simply as a stylistic challenge (if you’ve not tried that). I’m putting out feelers for rescheduling the Low-Fi weekly gathering for Saturday 9/5 at 9am rather than Sunday9/6 at 9am. It is a 3 day weekend in some places in the northwestern hemisphere and my typist is whining about keeping Sunday open.
Saturday would be okay with me. Either one will do.

On Sunday 8/31 Glori Maertens did a comprehensive walkthrough on the tools, inspiration, and challenges in creating a dance performance. She did most of the presentation in voice and her notes are included below.

The Medici University Gallery of Art is pleased to announce its first exhibition at the Art Farm (LEA28).
“Touch Me – While I Hold My Breath” by Gwynie Beaumont, an installation of sculpture on the MUGA grounds and a retrospective of her photography in the gallery.
Opening show 1 PM SLT, August 15, 2015.
The show will run through August 22.
Due to real life, I won’t be able to attend, but the artist will be available to answer questions. I hope you all can attend.
The sculptures are really fun.
For the next show, I’d like to get everyone at the sim to contribute to an installation in the gallery. Make it a collaborative effort, the kind Edie envisioned. 😀
Gwynie’s been working really hard setting up and things are looking great. Please attend & make sure to touch the sculptures. 🙂

The Generatives, glitch, and gifs opening was held on Friday, June 5th. It was a nice event and there was a good turnout. The artists talked about their work and it was an opportunity for others on the campus and off to meet them.
Thank you everyone who helped with this event, loaned their work to the aspiring gallery, and attended this event. A special thanks to the artists – Pearl Grey, FeelsEmpty, Elle Thorkveld, and Michael Green – and to Oona for building the gallery.
The show will run through June 15. Please stop by if you haven’t had a chance to see the show. After that, I’ll try to do one last show, probably machinima.

This week I’m passing the Big Avatar on Campus award on to Alexandre. Alexandre is one of MU’s greatest contributors and most prolific artists. He is active on the blog, on campus, and he is a very diverse and talented artist.
If I had to say one thing about his art – and there’s lots to say – I’d say his art always makes me think, it makes me reconsider the world through his eyes. I love that. And his music is cool.

On a side note, I broke the award. I really couldn’t link my addition to it, but it’s on Alexandre’s studio, now. Sorry about that, Hope someone can fix it.

There’s an article that presents a more positive view of Second Life in Atlas Obscura. Written by Eric Grundhauser, it’s titled Forgotten Wonders of the Digital World: Second Life.
He had an excellent tour guide in Ziki Questi.
I discovered the piece this morning in this blog post by Inara Pey.
I think that was a key factor: Ziki Questi as guide. A lot of so-called reports have been based on haphazard visits and pre-conceived notions, so this was a very refreshing and very detailed look at the wonderment of SL. It really is a great read, so thanks for adding to the bandwidth!
Greetings, The next section of Café Sophistry, “The Popcorn Tear or Finding Virtual Forgiveness,” has been changed from Sunday 5/3 to Sunday 5/10 in honor of “my sleep” and to take part in a virtual Jane’s Walk – which hopefully lots are doing!
Today, Sunday 4/26 we held the second part of Café Sophistry Section 2, “Time – What is It?” Participants came away sufficiently versed. Is discussing time sustainable? I was surfing through the Medici University photo group on Flickr, looking for images to use with a new post in Astrid’s April A-2-Z Challenge, and was disappointed to discover that the majority of photos there are “© All Rights Reserved” and can’t be used by anyone for anything. 🙁
I realize a lot of MU Learners are very controlling (ha! It’s like D/s University around here!) but it also occurred to me that some MU peeps might simply not know that Flickr defaults to ©ARR and that it’s so easy to set it for a creative commons sharing license under the terms of your choice. I’ll show you the how first and then say a bit about the why at bottom.

Ryan, it’s probably less about being controlling and more about All Rights Reserved being the default setting.

I love the Stanford Entrepreneurial Thought Leader Series! (“ETL”) So many smart peeps sharing visions. Payroll sounds important, but dull to me! But Joshua Reeves really has powerful insights into how things work and how we can achieve not just “success” but “satisfaction.” In the latter portion he talks about the importance of scheduling your time, “otherwise you’re just reacting to whatever’s happening.” I don’t know about you, but I spend so much time just reacting to whatever’s happening! He also notes that he assumes there are always 1,000 good ideas, so it’s never about “what can we do,” but about “what’s most important for us right now.” Again, it may be an “entrepreneurship” talk, but I think so many of his ideas apply to our never-enough-time art careers too.

I was left feeling we all expressed provocative ideas but that I wanted more time, something like dining on a delicious dinner with ever so slightly small portions. The first Café Sophistry section, Gender and Virtuality, begins on Sunday, March 1 at 8:00 AM SLT. For those interested in the course on Sunday, it is also the day of the Convocation. This means attending a one hour class followed by the 10am convocation an hour later.
An alternate possible time on Sunday March 1 is from 2pm SLT to 3pm SLT. If you want to take this course on Sunday but would prefer 2pm SLT, please chime in.

The earlier, 8am, slot works better for me, and I’ll definitely plan to be there. I’m greatly anticipating this exciting workshop!!!
