Trends 2030 Here We Come!
Trendwatcher Richard van Hooijdonk looks to the future. Thanks to new techniques and the possibility to combine any number of options, we are sitting on the forefront of great changes. Changes that will take place in the fields of economy, work, society, technology, media, marketing, entrepreneurship and science. “Singularity” ensures that all our problems will melt away. Not to mention 4D printing, Internet of Things, Sensors, Big Data, Google Glass and cognitive computer chips that think like we think, foresee what we need. How many years until everyone has their own robot or drone? “Newism” is the frantic beating heart of the online world; hyper-competition, globalization and super consumerism. Can you handle it? Because it’s coming! Major trends are coming your way.

On Tuesday, May 26, at 11 AM, I would like to lead a photography trip to visit Mistero Hifeng’s artworks on two sims, LEA 29, and Blossomland. When we inquired about taking a trip there, he offered to answer questions about his work, but he speaks Italian, and would prefer to have questions on a notecard so that he could translate easier. I will post another notice about this trip, but today, I am looking for questions! If you had a chance to interview an artist who builds beautiful mesh statues, what would you ask?
-
Neeva
I would ask how they handle LOD issues so their beautiful works don’t collapse into ugly shapes when you back up from them. I’d ask them a thousand other techy, nerdy questions till they chased me away with a rake.
-
Newton
That’s a great question Neeva. “When building mesh objects, what are your best practices for catering to users’ different LOD settings?”
For Mistero:
What are your favorite building tools?
What are your favorite training tools?
Which artists, games, and grids have inspired you? Are there places you go besides SL for 3d art and 3d art communities? -
Elle
More generally:
What inspires your art?
What would you like viewers of your work to know about it? -
veyot
Thanks for helping me prepare the questions! I sent them to Mistero and he has answered quickly and thoughtfully.

New Collaborations from Pearl & Friends
Just like the Internet itself, at MU, Collaboration Rules! And no one’s doing it better than Pearl’s Story Board series.
In her new Man, Woman and Dog project, Oona, Elle, Paypabak, Veyot, and Neeva all offer their vision inspired by Pearl’s image series.

You guys are so awesome!

This isn’t the newest collaboration; it’s the first one of four that I’ve done. I’ve been posting them to my MU journal blog. It’s come to my attention that content is wanted for MU Creativty and now to KPO Gallery which (yay!) wants to include some writing too. The project has been changing, as projects do, by discovering easier ways and being told what is ‘wrong’ in the eyes of others. This first image/story had only four pictures and five submitted stories. The next two sets of photos, while interesting, were much more ‘prompts’ than photo art worthy of display. The last set, well I did a lot of work on it and it has seven pictures and two stories besides my own. Consideration was given to presentation in the gallery, which Myra is planning for this week, and to the presentation in MU Stories. This first set was the best choice for that. Art Ojula and I are almost ready with the next and last image/story project which has been planned for better presentation on MU Stories and the KPO Gallery. There will be about five weeks to write, it’s very flexible and I will be sending out personal invitations if need be. It’s interesting that so far, some of my favorite stories are from people who say they aren’t writers!

Izzy
Thanks for all the background info and for clarifying my inaccuracy Pearl! Wonderful project! Keep up the fantastic work!

Processing
Some people have asked for information on Processing and Generative Art. FutureLearn is offering a class on Creative Coding starting on August 3rd.
I also put together some information on Generative Art, Artists & resources (primarily Processing) at GenCreate. It’s sort of minimalist, but might be helpful.
-
Oona
Thank you Elle. I’d like to eventually learn this too.
-
Elle
You’re welcome, Oona. What you are learning with building and scripting will help you with learning this.
-
-
Neeva
Thanks Elle. You are always so wiling to share. I appreciate that a lot.

Elle
Thanks Neeva. 🙂

The “Immortal avatars”
The “Immortal avatars”
I have a project that allows you to achieve immortality. The idea – avatar has some properties of the host. To become immortal, you need to “Avatar” management script which allows it to travel in SL. He has to approach people and talk to them on different sims. Who is willing to write this script?-
Neeva
I’m willing, but not able script. I can only write scripts that change the color of a cube from blue to yellow.

Newton
Thanks Edie. This gathering was illuminating. I came in not quite understanding the “avatar sharing” notion despite a lot of personal experience with my “sister.” You clarified that and opened up to a lot of different options. Fun stuff.

Road Trip to Hemingway’s Studio
Pfeiffer’s barn in Second Life is the virtual recreation of a barn converted in the 1930’s as a studio to give Ernest Hemingway privacy for writing. Portions of “A Farewell to Arms” were written there. There isn’t much walking and it might take about half an hour, depending on how much we talk.
Two times are being offered. Thursday, 14th at 7:00 p.m. SLT and Friday, 15th at 11:00 a.m. SLT. If anyone needs a different time added, let me know. As long as it isn’t when I need to be sleeping, I’ll be willing to arrange it.
It’s already on the calendar.

Interdisciplinary Studies 16, 17, 18, 19 – Explorations with Avatars
Announcing 4 new, and concurrent courses:
Interdisciplinary Studies 16 – Fiction Writing for Avatars
Interdisciplinary Studies 17 – Photography with Avatars
Interdisciplinary Studies 18 – Avatar Design
Interdisciplinary Studies 19 – World Building for AvatarsThese 4 courses will meet concurrently and work together to tell Avatar Stories. We will use the 2 avatars I have created, “Paris Avatar” and “Sydney Avatar”. I’ve chosen unisex names for them so that their identity can be malleable to the stories each learner chooses to tell.

Next week's crit will be in the MU Gallery of Art!
A slight followup to the last post: Crit will go on same time (Wednesday), but not the same place. We shall leave Collaborateopolis for the new gallery space! This will be a good opportunity to catch up with the works of people whose schedules have been clashing with crit day – now we will have a chance to talk about our work collectively, instead of individually – We now have the opportunity to see how our works function together, as a whole.

The MU Gallery of Art is open and we want to show your art!
We’ve opened an art gallery on the ground floor of the new dance club. Please send me a work of your art – your writing, your photos, your towers, your devilish good looks. Anything. I’ll find a way of exhibiting it.
Myra,
Curator, The MU Gallery of Art-
Autopilotpatty Poppy
Hi Myra. I’m a 9 1/2 year old SLer, a rl and sl photographer. In 2008 I did an exhibit called Moon over Caledon and would like to exhibit the two pieces from that exhibit. One is called Men’s Discussion Group and the other is called Women Being Women. I’d love to show them in your gallery. Thanks so much for all your work!
-
Myra
HI, Poppy. Sure, contact me in-world. MU students have priority, but I should have room. And I think we have a spare studio spot if you want to join MU. : )
Thank you for your interest.
-
Oona
So excited for this opportunity to showcase the amazing art that MU Students are creating. Stop by often, as Myra changes out art, and donate often, I’m talking to every one of you and your amazing art, photography, mixed media, sculpture talent.

Feels Empty is Having An Art Show!
“FAMILY is a series of moving images revolving around technologically-mediated human relations. In a square format alluding to social media profile pictures on social network and genealogy websites, a family unit is structured via the relationship between subjects and objects emerging throughout the series. In one half of the pictures (5 set of 5 subjects, 2 male, 3 female) the family members have stable identities and are meaningfully unified by material processes. In the other half their identities become destabilized and vague, bound together by a virtual space.”
Please try and head out to support one of our own! 🙂 Runs from May 10 til June. 🙂
-
Neeva
It’s a really interesting show. I’m glad I took the time to go. Feels is prolific and talented And one of our own.
