Welcome to Café Sophistry’s first public exhibit, “Dystopian Daydreams.”
The mind always tells itself stories, even in the darkest situations. VR audiences flock to dystopian worlds. Is occupying apocalyptic aftermaths an act of coping, or cleansing and innocence? Do creators enjoy “exploiting decay” for its dynamic beauty?
Please join the Café Sophistry creators as we play with the Dystopian Daydream. Through April 2, 2017.

Art Chat is now on Mondays, 6 pm slt.
I’ve edited the video footage of the two end-of-session parties to 2:13 minutes. It was my intention to be unobtrusive while filming. Some of the art is blurry. But those of us who were there will likely remember the patience and supportive atmosphere as well as the interesting projects.
There are two parties at Low-Fi and Edie’s Farm the weekend of September 12, in honor of the work people have been doing, are doing, or just want to try to pull off on the spot. This is a semi-casual gathering for SL artists, performers, and friends to enjoy our dreams and process. Please bring a finished or in-process work to show or discuss. If you have an installation at Low-Fi or The Farm you can “show” that. This is a low pressure but hopefully interesting forum for all interested.
Location: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/LEA28/211/85/22
If you plan on attending and need anything special, please leave a comment below or contact Newton (lex.perdide) or RMarie Beedit (rmarie.beedit)
Thanks Newton. It hope to attend the Sunday morning one.
Most excellent Neeva. Also be advised that if you want to show an installation at The Farm that can be a “performance” too.
I would like a five piece orchestra to accompany me while I juggle and do a rope trick.
can do Veyot, can do.
On Sunday 8/31 Glori Maertens did a comprehensive walkthrough on the tools, inspiration, and challenges in creating a dance performance. She did most of the presentation in voice and her notes are included below.
There were over 20 attendees at this seminar, from both Low Fidelity and the Guerilla Burlesque troupe. Read more here.
And thanks to Veyot for the photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/veyot_secondlife/
Excellent class! Thanks to Glori, Guerilla Burlesque and Newton.
VB Friend and Guerilla Burlesque dancer Glori Maertens will perform and conduct a seminar at Low-Fi tomorrow morning, Sunday 8/30 at 9am SLT. If you’re interested in SL performance or any associated aspects (concept, dance execution, set design, particles, camera control, story, recording, other) please join us!
The Medici University Gallery of Art is pleased to announce its first exhibition at the Art Farm (LEA28).
“Touch Me – While I Hold My Breath” by Gwynie Beaumont, an installation of sculpture on the MUGA grounds and a retrospective of her photography in the gallery.
Opening show 1 PM SLT, August 15, 2015.
The show will run through August 22.
Due to real life, I won’t be able to attend, but the artist will be available to answer questions. I hope you all can attend.
The sculptures are really fun.
For the next show, I’d like to get everyone at the sim to contribute to an installation in the gallery. Make it a collaborative effort, the kind Edie envisioned. 😀
Gwynie’s been working really hard setting up and things are looking great. Please attend & make sure to touch the sculptures. 🙂
Congratulations Myra! Congratulations Gwynie!
So exciting!!
Show opening was great! I really enjoyed it. The display of the glyphs was very well done
Hello, On Friday 8/14 Guerilla Burlesque is performing at 7pm SLT and 12am SLT. Anyone interested in seeing this wonderful dance troupe perform live should try to get there by 6pm or 11pm in order to get a seat at this VERY busy show. Glori Maertens and Aubreya Joszpe are working on some seminars at The Farm sometime during our residency, status pending.

Thanks for the field trip, Newton. The dancers, sets & effects were amazing!
So great that you organized this field trip Newton!
Sad that RL prevented me from attending but I hope someone will post a little report from the field!
The Generatives, glitch, and gifs opening was held on Friday, June 5th. It was a nice event and there was a good turnout. The artists talked about their work and it was an opportunity for others on the campus and off to meet them.
Thank you everyone who helped with this event, loaned their work to the aspiring gallery, and attended this event. A special thanks to the artists – Pearl Grey, FeelsEmpty, Elle Thorkveld, and Michael Green – and to Oona for building the gallery.
The show will run through June 15. Please stop by if you haven’t had a chance to see the show. After that, I’ll try to do one last show, probably machinima.
Here are some pics from the event:
Great article Myra 🙂 The show was a great success I think. I’ll be sad when June ends, I love MUGA a lot.
Great write up & love the pics, Myra. It was a fun opening, thanks to my fellow artists and all who attended for making it that way! And thank you to Myra for curating & facilitating this exhibit and to Oona for all her gallery building. Excellent work.
I recall participating on one of Feels Empty’s Step Art creations. Fun! Great exhibit.
thanks so much, everyone. It’s official, now. I want your movies. We’ll figure out how to upload and host them.
Great work Myra – congratulations on a strong gallery show. And congrats to all participants! Making MU vibrant…
Thank you so much, Marie. So many people made this happen – Elle, Feels, Oona, Michael, Pearl. I was thrilled it turned out as well as it did.

Introducing a new course… Expressing Emotion through Art.
What does it include? Pretty much what the title says it is.
It is a class that explore emotions and expressing them through art. This is not just bound to drawing or painting. Anyone with a taste in art can take this course (including building, writing, photography, and even dance!). It is aimed on how you will express your emotions, and maybe even offer different perspectives in how to show them.
When: Tuesday at 8pm SLT starting on June 2nd.

Wonderful concept Jade – this should be inspirational!
looking forard to it on the calendar in bright ink
I hope this gets really interesting!!! Looking forward to seeing you all there!
Super exciting Jade!! Unfortunately I can’t make that time slot, so I’ll have to suffice with blog posts & flickr pix of the class.
I hope you have a great turn-out tomorrow night. It’s a wonderful course! Wishing you and all participants a fantastic experience!
This week I’m passing the Big Avatar on Campus award on to Alexandre. Alexandre is one of MU’s greatest contributors and most prolific artists. He is active on the blog, on campus, and he is a very diverse and talented artist.
If I had to say one thing about his art – and there’s lots to say – I’d say his art always makes me think, it makes me reconsider the world through his eyes. I love that. And his music is cool.
Congratulations, Alexandre.
On a side note, I broke the award. I really couldn’t link my addition to it, but it’s on Alexandre’s studio, now. Sorry about that, Hope someone can fix it.
Congratulations Alexandre!
Myra, I very much agree, he is a diverse and talented artist who makes cool music and is always willing to share very novel and interesting information. Congratulations Alexandre!
Congratulations Alex! It’s been so great to have you be a part of the campus community. Thank you for your contributions in-world, here on MU/Talk, etc!
Great pick. Thank you Alexandre for your many contributions to our community.
Ooooh, my friends, you surprised me with this award. I did not expect. Thanks to all.
Pfeiffer’s barn in Second Life is the virtual recreation of a barn converted in the 1930’s as a studio to give Ernest Hemingway privacy for writing. Portions of “A Farewell to Arms” were written there. There isn’t much walking and it might take about half an hour, depending on how much we talk.
Two times are being offered. Thursday, 14th at 7:00 p.m. SLT and Friday, 15th at 11:00 a.m. SLT. If anyone needs a different time added, let me know. As long as it isn’t when I need to be sleeping, I’ll be willing to arrange it.
It’s already on the calendar.
I will be there on THursday at 7pm. Thank you for organising this.
Announcing 4 new, and concurrent courses:
Interdisciplinary Studies 16 – Fiction Writing for Avatars
Interdisciplinary Studies 17 – Photography with Avatars
Interdisciplinary Studies 18 – Avatar Design
Interdisciplinary Studies 19 – World Building for Avatars
These 4 courses will meet concurrently and work together to tell Avatar Stories. We will use the 2 avatars I have created, “Paris Avatar” and “Sydney Avatar”. I’ve chosen unisex names for them so that their identity can be malleable to the stories each learner chooses to tell.

The MU Gallery of Art is open and we want to show your art!
We’ve opened an art gallery on the ground floor of the new dance club. Please send me a work of your art – your writing, your photos, your towers, your devilish good looks. Anything. I’ll find a way of exhibiting it.
Myra,
Curator, The MU Gallery of Art
Hi Myra. I’m a 9 1/2 year old SLer, a rl and sl photographer. In 2008 I did an exhibit called Moon over Caledon and would like to exhibit the two pieces from that exhibit. One is called Men’s Discussion Group and the other is called Women Being Women. I’d love to show them in your gallery. Thanks so much for all your work!
HI, Poppy. Sure, contact me in-world. MU students have priority, but I should have room. And I think we have a spare studio spot if you want to join MU. : )
Thank you for your interest.
So excited for this opportunity to showcase the amazing art that MU Students are creating. Stop by often, as Myra changes out art, and donate often, I’m talking to every one of you and your amazing art, photography, mixed media, sculpture talent.

Glad this went so well Vanessa. 🙂
Thank you Feels Empty for reminding us all that today is Yves Klein’s birthday! What a great idea to have a “Dead Artists'” walk on Sunday!
Medici University is such a vibrant place filled with so many living people, meetups, and collaborations. But we are also inspired by so many artistic spirits. From our Jane Jacobs inspired campus to the Barnett Newman Broken Obelisk sculpture not far from my own studio, to Yves Klein, to our very own Provost, and even me.
Please join me in celebrating artistic spirits past and present this Sunday at 9am!

Things have realigned and the CS Time Capsule Art Party can now happen at 8am SLT at Nostradamus 9. Just in case anyone did not receive this follow-up, I will still be hanging around Nostradamus 9 at 7amSLT making shady deals. But the official time of the Time Capsule Party will be 8am SLT. All the best – I think time had something to say about all of this!
The time for the Café Sophistry Time Capsule Art Party this Sunday 4/26 has been changed from 8am SLT to 7am SLT. The circumstances were unavoidable and I hope very much that you can still make it. I think we will have a lot of fun seeing what people did for the Time Capsule Art Party.
The event will start at Nostradamus 9 and we will proceed where intended. All the best, Newton.
9am – 10pm SLT! 13 glorious hours of people in their underwear on the MU campus!

I’m rarely online on Friday. Oh darn.
Thank you Ryan! We already had a short but intense dance with no pants party at Feel’s studio!
Your undies got featured giggles
Hello All!
I participated in a bunch of “Screen Tests” a long time ago and it was so fun. The idea was pretty simple: try not to move for about 3 minutes. Kind of like photo portraits in a way, but alive. And with eye blinks and small movements and such. I’ve decided to do a new batch and I’d love to have YOU be a part of it!
It’d be great if you’d like to BYO Stand Animation. And hopefully it’s one that barely moves. The less the better. But just a little is good. I’ve got lighting and such at my new studio at Maria-14 (the underwater one, next door to Neeva Torok and across from Collaborateopolis)
Up top is a sample of a Screen Test with Strawberry Singh, and here’s my own:
These look like fun, Edie! I came by to do a screen test, but you were offline…IM me when you can! xXx
These are fun, Edie. I’d love to do it.
Hey Edie, what do we have to do to participate in this? I’m in, just IM me if you see me! 🙂 🙂
Hi Skye, Myra & Oona! It’d be great to have you do Screen Tests! I have one “stand” that I used for My and Berry’s screen tests, as you can see it has very little motion. It’d be great to use a different stand, if you have one, or if anyone has suggestions for very minimal movement stands.
It could also have a bit more movement and be framed looser. But again, the idea is mostly a “living portrait” rather than an “animated” piece.
So, to do these, all we need is
A Stand
Pick a time
Thank you for your interest!
Neeva’s arranged for Anthea Sharp to speak @MU @Collaborateopolis @Maria-5-13 @Noon on Sunday!
You might like to take a peek at her website before the talk to learn a bit about Sharp and her work:
• Anthea Sharp.com
From 1996 to 2003, first from her dorm room at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, then from Washington, D.C., and finally from Sacramento, California, Jennifer Ringley, aka “Jennicam” “lifecast” her every activity to the nascent World Wide Web. She might be more famous for the few minutes of nudity and sex, but perhaps it was really the banality of everyday life that so fascinated her legions of viewers.
I’m not tempted to lifecast for 7-1/2 years, but the idea of Avatar Lifecasting seems interesting, at least interesting enough for a 24 hour live stream.
• Saturday 15 November ’14
• San Francisco time: Noon Saturday – Noon Sunday
• London time: 8pm Saturday – 8pm Sunday
• Sydney time: 6am Sunday – 6am Monday
Dancing, Shopping, Artgoing, Slumming and whatever else comes to mind.
I’ve given every SL “Friend” I’ve got permission to map me, so if you’re in-world, you can come join the experience anytime you want to drop in. For anyone around the globe with an Internet connection my oh-so-exciting 24 hours will be streamed live on the Vanessacam Channel on Ustream.
