Gosh, Isabella, you’ve set me thinking…I’ve neither seen nor heard from Donnie for weeks now. Do you think it is possible that he’s been in training for this event? Hmm…I wonder if Mr. Sweetman will march/crawl too. Wasn’t his brother was in the drinks trade?

Oh yes, Donnie & Patrick. All they ever talk about is beer! And where are they today of all days!?!?

Donnie! I saw him last sitting on a bar, dreaming (was it?) of two spirits — Gin and Tonic?

Are those spirits European? I have yet to encounter them. Perhaps those 2 are Yankee spirits?

I Send You this Lapis Lazuli

    What a color!

I loved the scene in Girl with a Pearl Earring where Colin Firth (Vermeer) sends Scarlett Johansson (Griet) to buy Lapis Lazuli and adds

My wife need not know about this

Damn that stuff was expensive. Yves Klein worshiped it.

Is lapis the most divine, royal, sublime color?

Or is there something about the relentlessness of any pure color? Kids go nuts with primary colors. As “adults” we exercise refinement in elegant palettes and blends. Or grey. Have we washed the power of pure color from our souls?

I Send You this Duchamp Dossier

    cadmium red photoPhoto by CraftyGoat

Ysidora! I’ve been struck by the dialog from your performance:

Your mom throws everything away and that’s why she has no history

She has no history because she is a woman

As you know I’ve been thinking about the magical qualities, the bounded serendipity of Cornell Boxes. Today I was thinking about that lovely collaboration I Send You this Cadmium Red, and another famous collaboration between 2 legendary box guys: Joseph Cornell & Marcel Duchamp’s Duchamp Dossier.

Weather it’s stolen land or a damnatio memoraie from your misogynist brother, we’re 2 dead women who’ve had some of our history erased. Would you care to start a correspondence? We might trade Spanish Land Grants, Cadmium Reds, Duchamp Dossiers, Renaissance Portraits, Lost Journals, or anything else. We could do it right here on react, or I know someone who just loves to make new sites and could set one up for us.

    What do you think?

What’s On [My] Mind – Live Hangout!

    Live from Houston!

    • Christa Forster 13:38 on 13/03/2014 Permalink | Reply

Wonderful! Thank you for this, Vanessa. I just posted in another place that my %#^& screen recording plan went awry because I FAILED TO TURN IT ON before the performance. I recorded every other thing — every rehearsal, whether formal or informal, making sure I had the technology down. Then, at the moment when it mattered, I failed!

Hah! “Ruin is a great teacher….” Indeed.

Also, Michael told me that the second performance was marred technologically by someone-who-shall-soon-be-clobbered’s unmuted microphone! (my husband’s).

Hah! Again. Perhaps it was my male ancestors making their presence known.

Here’s to you, Mistress of the Muted Microphone! Thanks for your support. It means a lot to me.

Ysidora’s What’s on [My] Mind just started! I’m watching by Google Hangout with EZTV and the live performance in Houston.

(I wonder if you can easily run a “real” camera (or cameras) into a Google Hangout. Haha, I’m so demanding! But anyway, if the camera could switch or move, that’d be a nice extra dimension.

Anyway, Ysidora just started singing!! Something about living with a white girl…

    Outing the Meta-artist

In yesterday’s Blueberry Hangout we discussed Molly’s continuing work with Opal Whiteley, and Michael introduced the fascinating artist Shea Hembrey. Like Roberta Breitmore, The Watermelon Woman, Luther Blissett, and many others, these artists work with ideas of Identity & Authenticity, of Fact & Fiction.

If you think about it, Rrose Selavy’s oeuvre isn’t all that amazing. She really only becomes interesting when you out that she’s “really” Marcel Duchamp. Oh isn’t that clever and insightful. Serbian artist Darko Maver created simulated horror and carnage of war installations. His pieces about war in the Balkans shocked and mesmerized audiences around the globe and even at the Venice Biennale. The twist was that he wasn’t a “real” artist presenting simulated (“fake”) war imagery; he was a “fake” artist presenting “real” war imagery. Maver’s work had already had a “real” and global impact, but the twist made it resonate more deeply (and also more artworld insiderly)

Are alternate identities only, or most, interesting once outed, and therefor rendered somewhat “over” once the punchline has been sprung? Can, Should, and How Does, an alternate identity stand on its own?

    Lost Journals

    illustration05

A charla is a type of seance then? Communication with those now incorporeal? This is useful. I am concerned that the journals of my 1560 mission for Catherine de Medici, Queen of France, are once again lost. They surfaced so briefly. I do not believe they have been destroyed. Or that the parties in possession of them are even aware of their true meaning or power. Are you able to locate these documents?

    Currently known fragments are here:

I gave a try to creating a little bit of a Cornell-like experience online. Here’s a simple page that just uses mouse rollovers. What I like about the rollover is it’s a tiny anthropomorphic thing. Like someone nodding their head when you converse, it’s just a bit of feedback that says, “yes, we’re talking!”

Meanwhile if anyone remembers that old “PBR” MOOC, the peeps over on the FB group are determined to get the certificates promised in the syllabus and for some reason, the instructors seem adamant that certificates not be given:

I’m not in that loop. I bailed out of FB and into Diaspora. Something similar but more flexible and open source. And oh yeah, user owned so Markie Zee doesn’t have his mitts on my stuff. Do the instructors give a reason for not wanting to give the certs seems curious? I can’t really see the cert being a deal breaker in a job interview though so it seems like a little bit of a waste of energy. But people will often stand on principle before they stand on their own two feet.

      • Vanessa Blaylock 10:05 on 27/02/2014 Permalink | Reply

Agreed Hugh. It’s not worth making a fuss. Yet weird that the MOOC that asked for more work than any I’ve taken doesn’t want to pass out certs. The instructors apparently claim they never offered one, but the FB group has pointed to the promise in the syllabus.

I originally liked the vision of Diaspora. But love or hate FB, it’s biggest strength is that it’s the new “Phone Book” with almost everybody in it. There aren’t a lot of peeps (that I know of) to share stuff with on Diaspora.

    • Hugh 10:16 on 27/02/2014 Permalink | Reply

All true. I just feel ikkey every time I use it and I have this messiah complex. If I join they will follow. So far I only know one person there. Perhaps there is an opportunity for a collaborative project there?

      • Vanessa Blaylock 10:25 on 28/02/2014 Permalink | Reply

Yes Hugh, there are SOOOO many platforms out there! For any activity you like there are numerous Proprietary, and numerous Open choices. Just to take blogging as an example, you could get an account at a proprietary site like Tumblr or Medium or Blogger, or use Open software like WordPress or Open Blog or Ghost. Or many others!

It’s an obscenity of riches! Perhaps all the choice / confusion is even a piece of why so many mostly use Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and that’s it. “FTY” IS “The Internet” for many. I was shocked to hear that many people can go a whole week without ever using Google Search, since I, like so many others, use it so many times every day.

It doesn’t have to be an oversimplified binary thing, but when I’m choosing which Feudal Lord to pledge my allegiance to, I choose Google. They’re still proprietary, and they definitely make choices I don’t like, but when it’s Google vs anybody else, Google’s perspective almost always suits me better than the other peeps.

With FB vs G, for example, Facebook really wants to be The New AOL. They’d love it if you never left their walled garden. It’s not quite that simplistic, and they do provide lots of hooks in and out, but I still find some truth in that perspective. By contrast, Google really wants you to surf the complete Information Superhighway, they just want to be the gas station on all the on-ramps. As a blogger, the Google perspex suits me a whole lot better than the FB.

    Plan for Upcoming Twitter Chat — #1850charla!! — on February 28, 2014

Okay, February 28 is only hours away, and that’s the day we take our #1850charla to the Twitter stage. I…I don’t really know what’s going to happen, but let’s pretend I do.

The original plan (from the .Re/cipes page) was to

pull sentences from…letters we’ve crafted (from our past to our present) to tweet out, using the hashtag #1850charla (a charla is the Spanish world for a “chat.”)

However, some of you may not have written a “letter,” but you still want to participate. Some may have been using this .Re/act page as your letter. And some of you may have written many missives; you may want to tweet out the whole collection in one fell swoop.

Anyone who wants can participate in anyway he or she wants. You will be participating if you use the #1850charla hashtag.

Schedule A: Between 9am and 10am PST (5pm to 6 pm UTC), the #1850charla “performance” will take place. If you are available, please join us on the Twitter stage during that hour. We will be chatting about _________________ (I’m still taking suggestions — from myself and others! if you would like to suggest a topic, please post it in the comments here. I’m very open to suggestions right now!

Here are some useful resources for prepping for the chat, especially if you’ve never participated in a Twitter chat before.

Schedule B: If you are unable to attend the 9am to 10 am PST chat, then please consider contributing to the #1850charla throughout the day; you can do so by posting something related to the topic/s and adding the hashtag #1850charla.

On February 29, I will “Storify” or create a custom Twitter timeline for the #1850charla and share it here on .Re/act and via Twitter.

Thank you so much for your participation so far. I am truly grateful for your playful and adventurous spirits!!

How wonderful Christa. So this is not the thing called “Tweetchat” but rather a “Chat on Twitter” (with #1850charla) – is that right?

And then we can participate about our letters or whatever else for the one hour… or the rest of the day?

      See you Friday! 😀

Yes brothers and husbands can sometimes be the…

Yes, brothers and husbands can sometimes be the lowest vermin. It’s old news. But people can also be so beautiful. This 21st century is about exponential possibilities. The 16th was about a scarcity of possibilities, even for a Medici Princess. Yet for all the abundance of this time, I am troubled by 2 trends: sedentary lifestyles and academic lethargy.

Everything is better, save for our bodies and minds sliding into disuse. Too much of both work and play is now experienced from a chair parked in front of a flat-screen. The university has become too much about the pursuit of a piece of paper, not about a rich, humanist education. And so I offer Izzy’s Gym and Medici University, new hopes in a new century for our reinvention, body and soul.

It always ends in tears….Boys should never play with guns

I’ve been off the grid the last few days. Sooo 1850s. I went to see a medium and as I was telling Ysi she was more of a small, coming in at 155cm and weighing 45 kg. Still she was able to see the future. And as I suspected it’s not pretty. My brother John’s political rantings have so influenced his son that he got seriously involved with the movement for independence and the plight of those who fled the famine for America by helping to establish the Irish-American Colonisation Company in 1880. My nephew, John, stored guns on the site of the brewery for revolution. Because it was not proven that he was directly involved he escaped a jail sentence but the brewery was given a punitive fine (guns and alcohol is never a good idea). The fine, coupled with the financial loss caused by his American exploits, bankrupt the brewery which was then bought out by Guinness six years after I died. At least I did not have to see the Brewery’s sale but I did see its rapid demise. After that John devoted himself to politics full time and co-founded Sinn Fein in 1905. When we won independence in 1921 John felt he was too old to contest the election and so my son Roger stood for a seat which he won. However Roger resigned from parliament less than 12 months later. He stood down as a contentious objector as he did not like the direction the civil war was taking. And he didn’t even have a keg to drown his sorrows in. Ironically we married into a bunch of alcoholics after that. They really missed the boat. Next time my gggs drinks a pint of Guinness I’m going to haunt him with the worst hangover ever.

    Fever!

    ¡Ay Dios Mio!

I’m worried, so worried about the state of our world. As a result of the hoards streaming into Alta California to plunder the land and the rivers for this gold that they believe the whole land rests upon, much turmoil has erupted. They call our land — which is now newly their land — “the golden state,” but they should be calling it the red and black and blue state because of all the spilled blood and violence being done to get this gold. I have been up to my eyeballs in safeguarding native women and children, refugees to our mission San Juan Capistrano, who have heard rumor that they gain shelter here, gain safety. As I am “la llavera,” I have been taking them in and keeping them in the attic at nights, but we are running out of room! I’ve heard told that there are men in the north full of so much cupidity that their eyeballs are literally turning yellow!

    Gold-207483

Meg, who seems to have a stronger immune system than most (I’m not positive she is human) is perhaps safe on Mars, but as I have not heard anything from the others (sweet Oscar, Donnie — whose immune system I’m sure is dashed due to his lifestyle — Isabella, Mr. Sweetman), I fear that my comadres and compadres have been victims of some new violence or virulence and that the end is truly nigh!

    • Patrick J. Sweetman 00:34 on 26/02/2014 Permalink | Reply

No I’m here I had the deep blues (to go with your reds and blacks) after visiting the clairvoyant. I was told she was a medium but she turned out to be very small. Huh advertising. So I snuck off for a couple of days to gather my thoughts. Oh and violence is coming on over here. All guns blazing. My nephew John will bring you some if needed but I fear that will be too late as he only starts to get involved in America in the 1880s. Still let me know if there is anything I can do. Truely yours, PJ

Hey Ysi (goes with Izzi) it looks great. And I’ve no problem hanging out with Prima Donnas. Who’s going to throw the best parties the Prima Donnas or the Wallflowers? I’m with the PDs all the way. And anyway in a previous life I was Sarah Bernhardt, that’s enough Prima Donna for any man!

Ah, Sarah! I love her style! I’ve turned my hair into a nest for birds but never into a belfry for bats! Next up….
